Implementation of a circular economy model in technical and technological institutes in Ecuador
Abstract
The circular economy has been considered a key strategy for promoting sustainability in higher education institutions. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the circular economy model at Instituto Universitario Edupraxis, examining its effects on academic, research, and institutional dimensions. The study was conducted through a case study using a mixed-methods approach and participatory action research. A total of 117 members of the educational community participated in the study. Likert-scale surveys, direct observation, document analysis, and institutional monitoring were employed for data collection. The results revealed initial limitations in training and curricular integration, although a high willingness to participate was observed among the educational community. The implementation promoted curricular mainstreaming, the development of research and community engagement projects, and institutional practices related to waste and electronic waste (WEEE) management. It is concluded that the model constitutes a viable and potentially replicable strategy for strengthening sustainability in higher education institutions.
